"Good News and a Better Life for All Without Discrimination
of any Kind"
- Mission Statement of the Konde Diocese

Our synod, the Lower Susquehanna Synod, is companions with
the
Konde Diocese, a diocese in Souhtwest Tanzania. The diocese borders Mbeya and
Lake Nyasa. The center of the Konde Diocese is the town of Tukuyu,
and it is where the headquarters are located. The current Bishop is Dr.
Israel-Peter Mwakyolile. The General Secretary is Mr. Otinel Mlimba. The
Konde Diocese is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, the
ELCT.
Our companion Congregation is Isuba. Please see our Isuba
page for
more information.
Manow Lutheran Secondary School is a private secondary school run by the
Konde Diocese. It was founded in 1993 by the ELCT. About 300 students
currently attend Manow.
In Tanzania, all students are required to go to Primary school for seven
years. At the end of Standard 7, students are required to take an exam
before going on to Secondary school. If students do well, then they can go
to public secondary school, but if they dont do as well, they either are
left to find a private school or start to work.
Manow provides education to students who do not make it into Public School
and to students who would rather go to a Private School. Public Schools are
overcrowded and have unqualified teachers, so Private Schools are a good
alternative for families who can afford it. Manow costs about $550 per
year, which is pretty expensive considering families usually make about a
dollar per day.
Therefore, one of our
outreach missions is to help provide scholarships to the students. We want to
raise enough money for four scholarships every year. Our main fundraiser for
Manow is the monthly noisy offering. We take a collection for Manow the first
Sunday of every month.
